Very much a fan of driving feedback upwards.

I recommend all who aspire to be leaders condition themselves to proactively seek feedback on themselves from their teams and peers out of habit. You will discover over time as I have that a significant number of our best leadership habits will be formed because of the feedback we solicit. Point is, there are huge wins for all to come out of this process.

In my 2014 post on Becoming the Best Boss, I share how I make the performance review process a two-way dialogue. My direct reports are advised in advance that they have to review me as well when we talk. I emphasize the importance of getting their feedback to my development, plus I create a safe place for them to practice coaching upward. A routine yet non-threatening way of driving team development without having to resort to covert 360 processes as the main generator of information.
