Sydney is a city that pulsates with life, from its shimmering waters and sweeping coastlines to its bustling markets and restaurants. But what truly sets this city apart is its incredibly diverse and delicious food scene. Whether you’re a die-hard foodie or simply someone who appreciates good cuisine, Sydney will not disappoint. So, if you’re planning a trip to this beautiful city, get ready to indulge in some of the best flavors and dishes Australia has to offer. Here’s a list of the top foods you must try during your first trip to Sydney.

Barramundi, or “Barra” as it is affectionately known by locals, is a true star of the Australian seafood scene. This fish is a favorite among Australians and is prized for its rich, buttery flavor and tender, meaty texture. It’s no wonder that it’s a staple on the menus of many seafood restaurants throughout Sydney. Barra can be prepared in a variety of ways, including grilling, baking, or frying, but one of the most popular ways to enjoy it is simply grilled with a squeeze of lemon. When cooked correctly, the skin becomes crispy, while the flesh remains succulent and flavorful.

For something a little more adventurous, try some kangaroo meat! *Double checks notes* Yep, I said that right. Kangaroo is a lean and flavorful meat that’s actually pretty popular in Australia. You can find it on the menu at some restaurants and even in the supermarket. One of the best places to try kangaroo is at The Australian Hotel in The Rocks. They serve up kangaroo burgers and steaks, as well as other Australian specialties.

If you’re looking for something familiar, Sydney has some wonderful fish and chips. This classic meal is a must-try when visiting the city, especially if you’re by the coast. One of my favorite spots to grab some fish and chips is Doyles on the Beach in Watsons Bay. You can enjoy your meal with stunning views of the harbor and the city skyline.

Another dish that’s a must-try in Sydney is a meat pie. This savory pastry filled with meat and gravy is a staple in Australian cuisine. You can find them at bakeries and cafes all over the city. One of my favorite places to get a meat pie is at Harry’s Cafe de Wheels in Woolloomooloo. This iconic food truck has been serving up pies since 1945 and has become a Sydney institution.

If you’re a fan of Asian cuisine, then you have to try some of the amazing dumplings in Sydney. Whether you prefer steamed or fried, pork or vegetarian, there’s a dumpling for everyone. One of my favorite places to get dumplings is Din Tai Fung in World Square. This restaurant has locations all over the world and is known for its delicious dumplings and other Taiwanese dishes.

For something a bit more upscale, be sure to try Sydney’s famous seafood platters. With fresh seafood available year-round, it’s no surprise that Sydney is renowned for its seafood cuisine. From platters featuring prawns, oysters, and lobster to grilled fish served with crispy chips, there’s a seafood dish for every taste preference. Pair it with a glass of crisp white wine or a cold beer, and you’ve got a meal to remember.

Moving on to something for the sweet tooth, it’s time to indulge in some lamingtons. These small sponge cakes coated in chocolate and coconut are a dessert favorite in Sydney, and for good reason. The combination of soft sponge, rich chocolate, and flaky coconut is a match made in heaven. Whether you’re sharing a plate with friends or indulging on your own, lamingtons are a must-try dessert in Sydney.

Avocado toast is an Aussie breakfast staple. While it may seem simple, the quality of the ingredients can make all the difference. Head to a local cafe or brunch spot and order up a slice of toasted sourdough topped with perfectly ripe avocado, crumbled feta cheese, and a drizzle of olive oil. Trust me, you won’t regret it.

While not necessarily an Australian invention, the vegan burger trend has taken Sydney by storm in recent years. From beetroot patties to pulled jackfruit, there are endless options for plant-based burger lovers. You’ll find them on menus at trendy cafes and burger joints throughout the city, and they’re often just as delicious as their meat-based counterparts.

You can’t visit Sydney without trying some of the amazing gelato. Gelato is an Italian-style ice cream that’s become incredibly popular in Sydney. There are so many great gelato places in the city, but one of my favorites is Gelato Messina. They have a constantly changing menu of creative flavors, as well as some classic ones. It’s the perfect treat on a hot summer day.

Lastly, don’t forget to take home some Tim Tams! Tim Tams are chocolate biscuits with a creamy filling, coated in even more chocolate. They’re the ultimate indulgence and you can find them in just about every supermarket and convenience store in Sydney. Try them chilled straight from the fridge for an extra delicious experience.

Sydney has a diverse and delicious food scene that’s just waiting to be explored. Whether you’re craving seafood, pastries, Asian cuisine, or something a little more unique, you’re sure to find it in this city. So come with an empty stomach and an adventurous spirit, and get ready to taste your way through Sydney. (And seriously… don’t forget to bring home some Tim Tams.)
