Over 65 per cent of accounting professionals think that businesses should keep dress codes in the workplace, according to research from CV-Library.

The research surveyed 1,200 workers about dress code policies and found that 72.9 per cent do not agree that dress codes are outdated and like to follow a dress code in their workplace.

Professional

The survey showed that accountants in particular enjoy following a dress code at work, with 48.6 per cent saying that having a smart dress code enables them to look professional to their clients, whilst 28.6 per cent said that it makes them feel more professional.

However, accountants are becoming more accepting to different dress codes in the workplace, with over 80 per cent saying that they appreciate that dress codes have changed, whilst 50 per cent believe that there will be more casual and relaxed dress codes in the future.

The research comes after several banks changed their dress code policy in order to attract talented workers. Amongst these were Goldman Sachs and JP Morgan, with both companies allowing their staff to follow a more casual dress code.

Debate

CV-Library Founder and Managing Director Lee Biggins commented: “There continues to be a lot of debate around dress codes in the workplace and whether it’s still a necessity to dress smart. Every workplace is different and the rules are very dependent on the industry or role that a person is working in, though it’s clear that accounting professionals recognise that dressing smart can improve their professionalism.”

He added that there is no real evidence to suggest that there is a link between standards of behaviour and dress codes and personally believes that workers should always dress smart if they are in an external facing role or meeting with a client, customer or supplier.
