London named best city in Europe for digital entrepreneurs
London has been named the best city in Europe for digital entrepreneurs in a new report from Nesta and the European Digital Forum.
The European Digital City Index analysed 28 capital cities in the EU, scoring them on core themes such as business environment, mentoring, managerial assistance and digital infrastructure.
The index also took into account areas such as crowdfunding, account business funding, entrepreneurial education and training, and culture and recreation popularity.
Twenty cities from the UK featured in the index, with London being ranked the highest for its vibrant entrepreneurial culture, access to capital and access to a skilled workforce. Other cities that featured in the index include Cambridge, Bristol, Oxford, Manchester and Edinburgh, which all scored in the top 20.
Stockholm was also named one of the best places in Europe for starting up and growing a digital business, scoring second place in the index. This was followed by Amsterdam, Helsinki, Paris and Berlin.
Nesta Head of Startup and New Technology Research Chris Haley commented: “Government must continue to invest in digital skills and digital infrastructure, as well as addressing the cost of office space, if it is to continue to attract the next Deliveroo or FundingCircle, with many competitor cities in Europe, China and the US working hard to attract young firms.
“Of course, it also remains to be seen how a ‘hard Brexit’ will impact on the UK’s business allure for digital startups, given that access to markets is also hugely important.”
