I laughed as I remembered someone I dated from Arkansas who talked about Cherokee lineage. The thing is, many many Americans are wrong about their heritage. It usually comes down to stories not fully fleshed out and a lack of any real documentation rather than a malicious intent. And these stories mean much more to impressionable children and teens. I can easily understand Warren’s believing in her Indian heritage when she was younger. I can also understand some of the consternation I have heard lately from true Cherokees and others. It is just one of those things, one of the many things, that become unpleasant in public discourse in our country today. And that’s a shame.
