Dr. Kim is not exempt from the harsh life of North Korea even though she is part of the higher class. She experiences the shortage of food and starts taking payments for her services. She also picks pears and whatever else she can find outside of town. She cares about her patients to the point of making house calls. She eventually switches over to pediatrics and I think that’s when she really looses faith in communism. She gets to see first hand children dying from the effects of malnurishment.
