Well said David! Training programs for teachers probably must include the concept of cognitive adaptation. As a parent I have come across many teachers who do not have any qualms about openly commenting about a child’s abilities and stating that they are incapable of something. I once overheard a teacher tell my friend that her son (a very intelligent boy who loves to read) that he simply cannot draw. She was loud enough for all of us around to hear. Worse, the child was present. That particular incident has remained in my head for a very long time now. My friend has heard this comment so many times that she strongly believes that her son cannot draw. She and I frequently debate on that matter. I always tell her that just because she or someone else does not understand his work of art, she cannot dismiss the fact that he has created something from his imagination and call it bad. I once told her that he might just be the Picasso of the current century if only he is allowed to experiment with his style of drawing, if he wants to, instead of being judged and labelled as “Bad at drawing”.
