One compliment at a time
On Tuesday, May 4th, I was going to a park with my friends to have a nice picnic under the beautiful sun.
And something unexpected happened. I was saying hello to some people and an old lady stopped near us. I did not really think anything of it at first. But then after 1 or 2 minutes I said goodbye and with my friends we wanted to continue walking and the old lady approached me and told me the nicest thing ever said to me. She said:
“Excuse me, but I just wanted to tell you that you are very well dressed! I really like the way you dress.”
I was surprised and I blushed, I actually cannot physically blush, but you get what I mean. I put my hands over my mouth in surprise, I smiled the biggest smile ever and I thanked her. Now, thinking back, I wish I had hugged her… But if you know me then you know that I am a little bit shy so I simply thanked her multiple times while hiding my face. I’m not very used to be complimented. But this compliment, I will hold very dear to my heart for the rest of my life! First of all, because she actually waited and respected mine and my friends’ space. She stopped and stood there very patiently. She needed to tell me this so bad that she waited for me to finish what I was doing. I was very touched by those random words of kindness. What she said is not what really matters to me. To be honest, if she had said something as random as “excuse me but I think that you look like the cutest bag of potatoes”, I would still have blushed and appreciated her opinion. After all, it must be nice to be the cutest bag of potatoes! haha But the way that she delivered the compliment aswell as the need to express her opinion to me, THAT, that is everything to me.
• Why don’t we compliment strangers in the streets (anymore)?
I find it very beautiful that a complete stranger would think something nice about you and they would feel this need to let you know. But sadly we don’t really do this, ever. And when someone does it, it is very surprising. I think that we should all say the nice things that we thing about to each others. Even if we don’t know the person. A compliment won’t hurt nobody. On the contrary, it will make their day or even their life!
I often think nice things about people that I pass by in my day-to-day life. Things such as “wow this girl is gorgeous!” ; “I love her hair” ; “this guy has the nicest smile” ; “this couple is very adorable” etc… But I never actually tell them what I think. Because I am shy! Which sucks…
But thanks to this old lady, I am going to try to tell people what I think! Even if it might look creepy! I am going to go to this girl and tell her that I think that she is beautiful! I am going to tell this girl that her hair are fabulous! I am going to tell this guy that he has a nice smile! (okay I will have a hard time with this one and I know I am not actually going to do it but one day maybe I will!) And I am going to tell this couple that they make the cutest couple ever!
• One compliment.
One compliment, can change someone’s entire day! It can also change someone’s entire life! I know that this old lady just changed my life for the better. Some days I might even wake up, put on some clothes and ask myself “will the old lady approve of my look?”
In conclusion, I want to, first and foremost, thank this old lady for opening my eyes and warming my heart in the most unexpected way. And to everyone reading this, give one compliment. Just one. Every day. One compliment per day to anyone you want! I will try this everyday, keeping the most amazing old lady on the planet in mind.
