Save icon 2015
Probably the most common icon i place in my prototypes and designs is the “Save icon”. And it varies in shape, size & color, from project to project for various reasons:
- Pm doesn't “feel” like it says enough “Save here! NOW! Forever!”
- The client doesn't get why should an arrow down to a line signify “Save” when clearly on most websites it says “Download”.
- Both parties commonly agree that the “Floppy disk” icon is obsolete.
And here’s where time consuming debate, mails back and forth begin. Draining the life and joy out of the project over a single, most commonly used icon. Who suddenly becomes the center of the universe! The most important thing in UI/ UX of the project. But not as important as other most important things. Well… You’ve probably been there;)
I’ve decided to create a “Save icon” for myself. Something simple, timeless, different but familiar. And i encourage you to create your own.
So what’s this icon is about.
- Accumulation. Whether it’s accumulation of rain water underground or Stocking supplies on a shelf. It’s about storing which subsequently means saving.
- Simple. 2 elements: a. Container / b. Arrow down that represents stored / saved data and suggests taking action.
- Different but familiar. If this needs explanation e-mail me
- Timeless. I’ve mentioned it before… Accumulation of water. Water will always follow gravity. Timeless because this process has been going long before life as we knew it began. And probably will after.
Feel free to comment. Add you designs, trash talk. Enjoy
