2008 — My Journey
2008 was really the year that started my journey of improving my health. This was the year I reached my heaviest weight of 215 lbs. and was by year end the point that spurred further weight loss simply due to seeing myself thinner. I started losing weight and wanted to lose more!
It all starts, due to a number of reasons, by working a holiday season at Costco Wholesale. Since my skills were highest in food production I began by spending my time in the bakery. Lifting pans, batter, kneading bread, and the like were a daily routine. This huge amount of physical activity helped me lose the first half of the 30 lbs. I lost in the two months I worked over that holiday season.
After having made palettes and palettes of pumpkin pies, and as the Thanksgiving rush began to dwindle, I was placed on the Tech Sales Floor. My knowledge of technology, everything from TV’s to cameras, allowed me to jump right into the thick of things and assist during the busiest retail time of year, the infamous Black Friday. Though it didn’t match the bakery in movement and physical exertion, I was still on my feet for 6 hours a day walking the isles, straightening the displays, and occasionally helping customers carry and load items into a vehicle.
Right at the end of my time at Costco I was out in the parking lot hand pulling carts back into the building. Though the cart pushing machine was available to me I really didn’t like using it. I found it to be more cumbersome than helpful, so I instead pulled a line of carts with the assistance of a black strap from lot to storage area over and over and over again. Needless to say a great way to finish off my weight loss for that season!
In all honesty I wasn’t eating all that healthily at that time. Fast food burgers were a frequent experience. It goes to show that just one part of health is physical activity. I was able to lose a good bit of weight just by being on my feet for extended periods, but that says nothing about how well my body was repairing itself and being healthy overall. Healthy eating came later for me, as you will soon read in the continued ‘My Journey’ series of articles.
Well to keep this a pleasant self-history experience I will be stopping here for today. Each upcoming week I will release another year of my story… The journey through which I traversed to bring me to where I am now and how the experiences on this journey have laid the groundwork for where I am adventuring next.
Thank you for coming along!

I am no longer associated with Costco Wholesale Corporation. Yet, it was an experience on my path to wellness. Thank you.
