CES 2018: LG rollable UHD TV is incredible

The dream of a roll-away, big-screen HDTV is now finally a reality thanks to LG’s stunning 65-inch, rollable UHD, which the company unveiled at CES 2018 in Las Vegas.

How many displays can do this?

The display builds on technology LG introduced two years ago at CES 2016. At the time, the display was just 18-inches, connected to exposed electronics, and had to be handled with soft, cotton gloves.

Not only is the new display full-sized, it remotely unfurls into a rigid, free-standing large-screen HDTV. LG wouldn’t let me photograph the back, but I could clearly see the mechanism they devised to control it. The ultra-thin OLED display sheet is backed by a relatively fine series of metal bars, that run the width of the display and comprise a flexible spine. Behind that is an extender bar that basically rises up out of the box while simultaneously unrolling the sheet. This whole mechanism is controlled via a small remote that noticed the LG rep held close to the box.
