I can still see the small car nudging my car over. I was cruising at 60 MPH in the left lane of a local highway when another car came up on my right side, matched my speed, and started pushing me over. Stunned, I mashed my horn as the other car, apparently just realizing they were colliding with me, sped off.
I tightened my grip on my steering wheel and, foolishly, began chasing the other car, trying to get a good look at their license plate, but it was going 80 and zipping in and out of traffic. Cursing, I pulled off the road to examine the damage. My once unblemished car had a nice dent on the right side. If only I could find that car.
A 2015 National Highway Traffic Safety Administration study found that, in 2010 in the U.S., at least 24 million cars were damaged in crashes, totaling $242 billion in damages. It’s not just high-speed accidents. Sometimes our cars get scratched or dinged when they’re parked in a lot or at home.
With so much activity around our cars, it is surprising that we don’t keep better watch over them. If, for example, I’d been filming the space around my car when that lunatic hit me, I might have been able to go back, watch the footage and find that license plate.
