If you want to be a filmmaker, find your bliss

Depending on where you are in your filmmaking career, you may be doing a lot of things that are tangentally associated with filmmaking. If you are directing and producing, chances are you may be editing your own content, as well as marketing it, as well as prepping for the next film.
There is a lot of admin work that goes into filmmaking. Finding cast and crew, setting up auditions and interviews, drawing up contracts.
The day is never done.
With all of that, it is important to remember your bliss. Why did you get started? What excites you about the process?
I love writing. I’m drafting this article with my Pelikan fountain pen on a Mead Cambridge writing pad, while listening to Arms and Sleepers, and there’s a nice breeze. It doesn’t get better than this.
When I’m on set working with a cast and crew, all of my attention is on the actor, on the performance, and everything else in my life melts away.
What is your bliss?
Is it finding the perfect shot to convey a feeling? Or finding an awesome cut? Or connecting with your audience on social media? Or watching hundreds of actors audition until you find the right one?
You owe it to yourself and the people you work with to find your bliss, to find your passion when it comes to making a film.
The process needs to become the reward, because if you’re choosing praise, riches, or fame you may find yourself throughly disappointed.
