Quick Hoisin Shrimp Recipe to Tantalize Your Taste Buds

Bursting with flavor, this quick shrimp recipe will become your favorite in the kitchen when you need some great food packed with flavor in a short time! Happy family and happy guests!

I love shrimps. I like them best when they’re crunchy and saucy. One lazy weekend I decided to give these little beauties a try at home with some leftover hoisin sauce that I had in the pantry. It’s a rule — there should be no leftover sauce, ever. So I usually use sauces to experiment new recipes, surprisingly this one turned out hot!

The recipe’s pretty simple. Yes. It’s just got only few ingredients. Yet, it turned out bursting with flavor, color, texture and — there is no guarantee that you will not get food coma when you try it!

So what goes in it? With simple and easy ingredients, this quick hoisin shrimp recipe is sure to take your taste buds for a ride! Here’s what you’ll need:

Ingredients:

  • ¼ cup hoisin sauce
  • 1 tbsp. white vinegar
  • 2 tsp soy sauce
  • ½ kg shrimp (peeled and deveined)
  • Olive oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Toppings (sesame seeds, dill, green onions, coriander,)

Method:

  1. Mix vinegar, soy sauce and hoisin sauce together in a bowl. Whisk well until combined and set aside.
  2. Use a kitchen towel or cloth to dry the shrimp. Once the shrimp is clear of any water, season it with salt and pepper according to your preference.
  3. Heat oil in a sauce pan (better to use a large one) over medium heat. Sauté the shrimp in two batches (½ and ½). Sauté for 2–3 minutes or until cooked.
  4. Transfer the shrimp using a dotted spatula (to clear away excess oil) to a plate or bowl.
  5. Repeat Step 3 and 4 with the other ½ of the shrimp.
  6. Once cooked, add the shrimp back to the pan with the hoisin sauce mixture. Sauté again for 1–2 minutes while tossing the shrimp so the sauce mixes well with it.
  7. It is best to sauté the entire batch of shrimp in hoisin sauce in one batch, else you may do it in two batches if you like.
  8. Remove the coated shrimp from the stove and sprinkle sesame seeds and thinly sliced onion rings on it. While these toppings are optional, they give the entire dish a kick of flavor that is always welcome.
  9. Serve with warm (boiled or vegetable fried) rice. You may also serve these with noodles, pasta or enjoy them as is without anything on the side.

Tip: Shrimps are easy to cook yet need to be cooked with extra care and precision. They can turn hard and rubbery if overcooked. They’re ready in 3–5 minutes, so make sure you don’t put them on the heat for any longer than that.

Alternate method for crispy and crunchy shrimps!

  1. Beat an egg in a bowl, add bread crumbs in another bowl. Dip each shrimp in bread crumbs and egg and leave it on a rack. Repeat again when one coat is dry.
  2. When the second coat is a little pasty and dried, fry the shrimp in hot oil until golden brown.
  3. Transfer on to plate using a dotted spatula.
  4. Heat hoisin sauce mixture in a pan.
  5. Transfer the hot hoisin sauce mixture on to the shrimps and toss well.
  6. Enjoy with noodles, warm rice or as is!

Which method did you like better?

Both methods work great and the shrimps taste equally delicious. But if you’re in a hurry to serve your guests or satiate your craving, then blindly follow method one!

Happy eating!
