App-iness -What’s in an App?

Today’s plethora of mobile-apps

There’s really only about 5 categories that a mobile application falls into:

  1. Entertainment
  2. Financial
  3. Productivity
  4. Travel
  5. Food

Entertainment

Entertainment apps are things like social media apps (Facebook, twitter etc…), video/music apps (YouTube, HULU, NetFlix, Vimeo, Pandora etc…) or Tabloid driven apps with hollywood spin. News or aggregation apps (News 360, Flipboard etc…) can also be considered in this category.

Financial

These apps include financial institution apps (Wells Fargo, Chase etc..), payment processing apps (square, paypal etc..), accounting apps/tax apps (quicken, quickbooks etc…)

Productivity

These apps include tracking apps like fitness trackers (spark people, fit bit etc…), GPS software (google maps, Waze etc…), Chat applications (Voxer, Hangouts, skype etc…) and scheduling apps like calendar or invite apps.

Travel

Apps connected to anything travel where users can book, review and rate hotels/venues (Travelocity, Orbitz, expedia, hotels.com etc…).

Food

Food apps give insight to new recipes, restaurants or lifestyle dieting (allrecipes.com or Foodily). Restaurant review apps also fit into this category.
