Beyond my comfort zone

I’m finding my role as a first time author to be a little beyond my comfort zone. Okay, a lot beyond.
My new book, Studio Stories, Illuminating Our Lives through Art, tells the deeply personal stories of the women I’ve taught through the last 10 years: how art and writing has led them to profound insights and dramatic life changes. I share insights from a lifetime of teaching and artistry, and from my daily walks along the river with my sweet dog Wiley.
And now. Now it’s my job now to help get this little gift of a book into the hands of those who will find it of value and maybe even treasure it.
I’ve gotten to be a guide through the mysteries and wonders of art to hundreds of people over the years. I’ve taught lots of different media to all different ages. I’ve helped so many people find their way to their own unique voice. And I’ve loved it. But, this is the thing: I’m still a devoted introvert at heart. This marketing-a-book thing is pretty much beyond my comfort zone.
But I believe strongly in Studio Stories. I’m committed to sharing my strong belief that we all have a fundamental right to create art — even if you don’t believe you have ‘talent’. Creativity helps us grow. It helps us appreciate our beautiful world more. It brings gratitude. It helps us understand ourselves, calm ourselves and be more understanding of others. Making art is a balm that many of us need in this challenging world.
In the spirit of sharing my book, I’ve asked a few people to read the book in advance of it’s launch. Umaimah Mendro,Founder and CEO of VIDA wrote this about Studio Stories:
“Profoundly Beautiful. Touching. Tender. And deeply powerful. Lauren Rader’s book will move your heart and touch your soul. Whether art is an important part of your life or not, this book will inspire you to face your fears and find and surrender to your true, best self. Every page a powerful inspiration. Every story a message to live by. One of the most genuinely beautiful, elegant, and powerful reads I’ve come across. I am in love with this book.”
These words, and other responses to this almost-launched book have done much to remind me of Studio Stories’ value to others. So, in spite of myself, I’m working on getting my little book out there.
