This has given me a lot of food for thought. It would be easy for me to take a back seat somewhat, do I bit of leafletting and door-knocking around the GE then see what happens. Under Jeremy Corbyn we would lose badly. I think he could lose us 100 seats or more. Obviously as a Labour member I do want to see 100+ MPs lose their jobs. I would then be afraid that many ‘moderates’ members would leave the Party for good, and future PLP candidates would be further to the Left (like Clive Lewis, Kate Osamor etc). All of this combined — coming back from a landslide defeat + a membership further out of touch from the views of the population that swing elections + a further Left PLP would mean it would take decades to come back from this.
I think the Party is literally on the brink. That is why the PLP has gone to such drastic measures to remove him.
If the Labour Party splits (as I think it would if Corbyn wins another leadership election) I won’t be smug towards my friends, saying ‘I told you he would be a disaster’. I would just be devastated. Splitting the Left vote in this country would be the greatest disaster for people like me and you.
