My First Periscope Broadcast
Saying a lot of words to an audience of very few.
Find me on Periscope at @LeMonkdeFunk

I decided to do my first Periscope broadcast last night. I’ve heard the term “Periscoping” being used more frequently lately and my curiosity was piqued. Whenever I find a new channel to distribute my wisdom to the sound of crickets I jump right on board.
I decided that I would film myself while philosophizing. But it wasn’t just plain ole philosophizing. Not for this guy. I was doing a kettlebell workout while I was sharing my story. And you know what?
I LOVED IT!!
I decided to talk about quitting drinking. The timing worked out perfectly. The story was done just as I was doing my 20th set of kettlebell high pulls. This was good because I was sucking some pretty severe wind by then.
As I talked and worked out I was fixated on the little counter in the corner that tells you how many people were watching. It never went above one. Fuck! I also banned my wife from watching so at least I know it wasn’t her :) And my mom will never be on Periscope so it wasn’t her either. That’s Ok. We all need to start somewhere.
I can tell that this will make me an even more effective speaker. I used the front facing camera so I could watch myself and make sure the camera was positioned properly. I got a front row seat to all my odd mannerisms. I whirl my hands around a lot — like a helicopter that is about to crash.
I also had some interesting insights about my story. Insights that will help me write and communicate it more effectively. I wasn’t expecting that at all. It’s possible that the singular focus of the kettlebells helped clear my mind to be open to new ideas. Then there was a broadcasting unit right in front of me when they popped into my head.
I’m only a few lessons into Gary V’s Building Your Personal Brand course on Udemy. But I already know that I need to get more content out there via more channels. To that end, I’m going to commit to Periscoping (is it a verb?) on a regular basis. I’m going to read my Book of Open each day via periscope at the same time each morning. I’ll put more of a twist on it though by deviating from the script and adding additional thoughts and insights.

I’m also going to do a 5 minute leadership Periscope before I leave work each day. I’ll sum up what challenges I faced and what I’ve learned. On top of that I’m going to broadcast every workout and talk to the audience while I’m doing it. I have a lot to say and this is a great way to say it while getting better and communicating.
Stay tuned. I’m pumped!
