What is Robot Process Automation?

For those of you that have been hiding under a rock for quite a few years, Robotic Process Automation or RPA is a tool that can help you with automating your business processes to improve the customer experience and reduce your costs.

For a definition of RPA, I like that from (cio.com)

RPA is an application of technology, governed by business logic and structured inputs, aimed at automating business processes. Using RPA tools, a company can configure software, or a “robot,” to capture and interpret applications for processing a transaction, manipulating data, triggering responses and communicating with other digital systems. …

How about if you could easily see the benefits of your process improvement work? Would that help your organisation make better changes? Well, it can be done and it can be done easier, faster and cheaper than by using your current process mapping approach.

If I had a pound for every time an analyst or PM or any other role said to me “we are not very good at the benefits side of change” I would be a very rich man.

Do you get asked ‘why are we doing this’? Do you get asked about benefits? Would your project pass the daily fail/local rag test? There is a better way, which has huge benefits for your organisation.

Whether you are delivering digital transformation (or any other programmes) in a traditional waterfall or agile way as part of a public sector project, it is highly likely that the key driver is to be more efficient and make savings. Even projects where there are no savings targets at the start have a nasty habit of suddenly developing them at a certain point in the project. It only takes a change of leadership, politician or a new round of budgets to suddenly highlight your project and ask ‘so what is it delivering in real tangible terms?’. …

Highlights of 2017 for me have been the following:

  • New members of the Engage Process UK user community
  • Some great workshops and strategic support sessions
  • Engage Process User Group
  • Lots of great events, presentations and conversations
  • Different sectors and processes proving the product
  • Audible and lots of personal learning
  • Realisation that the existing functionality of Engage can provide help with GDPR

Its great to see the user community growing in the UK. I am lucky to be able to go and work with many organisations working on a massive array of projects. We always aim to give value to our customers and are committed to delivering improved public services. I always learn when I am onsite doing training, demos or workshops. …

For once I am going to attempt to do a brief blog post! 2018 has been an amazingly busy and exciting time for us and we are seeing great growth and new customers as well as some spectacular events/discussions/learning. In the last couple of weeks we have been involved in the following:

  • Catch up with the process improvement projects with Sport Wales in Cardiff
  • A great event to start the year and have a look at the outputs here — Wales Digital Transformation Event
  • Offer — based on the excellent engagement in Wales we made an offer of 10% discount on licences if 5 Welsh customers sign up. We are also offering shared training, user group, translation and much more added value to grow our existing Wales network. 3 have already started the trials so just 2 more to make it happen contact us for a demo or trial. …

Last week we had the opportunity to attend the User Group in the Netherlands at the kind invitation of the Engage Process team. It was great to be able to get into the office in Amsterdam as well to catch up on all the exciting things that have been added to the HTML5 version and also the stuff road mapped for development across the next year.

From my perspective, as well as looking to pick the brains of the team to solve some challenges I have with mapping some new health processes, I was also looking forward to getting an opportunity to get some ideas and inspiration on how the community is using the tool to solve real business challenges. …
