I refuse to support the sweet tooth of cookie-seeking “allies.”
I also don’t bake.
Every time. Every. Damn. Time… I write an article about racism, allyship or white privilege and share it, some white person comes along to tell me just how much they’ve done for black folks. They list all their accomplishments, all the ways we should be grateful that they’re fighting for us. They’re seeking those damn cookies, and I don’t give them out to anyone.
Stop looking for praise just for being a decent person. Hell, I’m a decent person because I should be. What makes you think your doing the right thing makes you special? These cookie people are exactly why I’m wary of many self-described “allies” who brag about telling Aunt Jo she’s a racist and proudly lists all the marches they’ve attended.
I don’t believe you’re here to do the work. You’re here to hear the praise. You must eat that shit up when anybody says how amazing you are. I guess that makes sense. But it must be so much less sweet when you have to seek out those compliments.
This is probably why you do the work in the first place. Fighting racism runs second to your feeling good about yourself. This doesn’t make you a good ally. Does it mean you don’t try as hard if no one is pumping you up? I suspect your allyship is extremely conditional — the condition being…
