How Not To Pay Your Student Loans

There’s a problem here the with logic of “I didn’t get what I paid for, therefore college should be free, and because of that I’m going to avoid paying my loans for as long as humanly possible.” The principle behind free college tuition isn’t so that if your degree turns out not to be the certificate of success you were promised at least you didn’t go into debt to get it. The principle behind the free tuition movement is, among other things, to do away with the the idea that certain degrees are “worth” more than others. You’re basically using a socialist screen to make a capitalist argument.

It’s also unlikely that your current career issues are due to the problems with your degree. The fact is most of us get caught up with best practices in our training only once we get those jobs. The fact that those jobs have been few and far between shows the problem goes beyond issues in higher ed. I don’t want to downplay those issues because they are legion, but to continue to claim that your position on your loan burden is “principled” is, at best wrongheaded, and, at worst, dishonest. Would you be here had you gotten everything you wanted out of your college experience?
