Politics and rhetoric

When it comes to politics, a lot of time there is not an absolute right or wrong answer. Therefore, how well can you used rhetoric to present your idea, often decide how convincing your argument will be. In my opinion, rhetoric is the art of persuasion. Often we see lot politicians give very convincing speech on TV to help them with their elections, but we all know these speeches are usually carefully engineered to persuade certain group of people. I like politic, every time when I engaged in political discussion, I often find myself using rhetoric to persuade my friends to agree with me on certain issue. For example, gay marriage is very hot topic. I am an advocate for gay marriage, but some of my friends are not very found with the idea of gay marriage. I feel like whenever when my friends and I have a conversation about gay marriage, we all have different ways to approach the issue. My friends usually arguing against gay marriage from a religious point of view. They said the society has its rules, homosexuality has been considered morally wrong, therefore gay marriage should not be allowed. They believe by allowing gay marriage, their freedom of religion will become suppressed somehow . I, on the other hand, often follow my friends’ logic and combat their view using emotions. I told them that love is something that is very unique. It is what makes human being different from other animals. No matter if someone is gay, straight or bisexual, at some point in their life they will fall in love with someone, and love is beautiful, no one should suppress others’ right to commit to his or her partners. I think rhetoric is a very good way to communicate and exchange ideas with others. The discussion of politic is just one of many situation where I used rhetoric to achieve my goal.
