Hallucinogens are psychedelic drugs that change a person’s perception of reality. People often abuse these drugs for recreational purposes. Thus, one can use hallucinogens to relax, detach from reality, or to relieve stress.

  1. Hallucinogens change the perception function of our nervous system. Therefore, hallucinogens users may experience a pleasant and intense high, euphoria, or a horrifying and awful experience.
  2. Hallucinogens abuse may cause many negative effects. These effects will vary from person to person. The most common side effects that hallucinogens may cause include dizziness, confusion, blurred vision, or a fast heart rate. Many people may experience different hallucinations like hearing or seeing things that are not real, as well as time and place distortion.
  3. Hallucinogens are both synthetically and plant-derived substances. These drugs are extracted from several Amazonian plants or certain types of mushrooms.
  4. The most commonly known hallucinogens include ketamine, LSD, peyote, salvia Divinorum, psilocybin (magic mushroom), PCP (angel dust), and ayahuasca.
  5. These drugs come in various forms, such as powder, tablets, liquid or tea. Thus, one can brew them into a tea, swallow them as liquid, tablets or pills, snort, inject, smoke or consume these drugs raw or dried.
  6. The effects of hallucinogens occur within 20 to 90 minutes and last up to 6 or 12 hours after their administration.
