I think you failed on your conclusion:

You clearly expressed your opinion against small functions.
The point you were correct is what is the “one thing”. It is up to the team to decide. Then comes down to how leaky is the abstraction. For example, people complain about how hard id too keep track of too many functions in a stack. If you see a function saveToDatabase()`, it should just believe function honours its behaviour.
Anyway you are brave to write agains the `Dogmatic Supremacists` in the industry.
