This Week on LetsLoop
Following the (seriously impressive) comeback from A Tribe Called Quest last week, this week it’s the turn of heavy metal legends Metallica. It’s been 8 years since they released Death Magnetic, and following the truly awful collaboration with Lou Reed (Lulu was sadly the great man’s last album) they sorely need to assure fans that they’re not past their prime. The good news is the reviews are in and Hardwired…To Self-Destruct is: “the best thing they’ve done since The Black Album” (Kerrang), “vital and innovative” (NME) and “a triumphant return to form” (The Guardian). Phew!
In other news, New York indie-rockers Chavez released their first new song in 20 years: The Bully Boys; supergroup Minor Victories (Editors, Mogwai and Slowdive) shared another gorgeous Orchestral Variation (if you missed it, be sure to check out Cogs — truly breathtaking!); the future Lando Calrissian (aka Donald Glover, aka Childish Gambino) shared Redbone; and we also have new songs from Xiu Xiu, Sylvan Esso, Pissed Jeans, Kate Bush & more.
Oh, and since it wouldn’t be 2016 if we didn’t have some bad news to give you (RIP David, Prince, Glenn, Phife, Leonard, Maurice, Bobby… to name but a few), this week saw the sad loss of yet another musical legend: Sharon Jones. In her short 60 years (or should we say 20, she only released her first album at 40) Sharon released 7 albums, receiving a Grammy nomination for 2014’s Give The People What They Want. If you want to find out more about this incredible woman, we highly recommend a documentary called Miss Sharon Jones! that was released earlier this year. RIP!
