Music Monday, 4th April 2016
Welcome to Music Monday — your weekly round-up of the Best New Music, videos, articles & upcoming releases on Let’s Loop.
💯 SONG OF THE WEEK: “Go Up (feat. Cat Power & Pharrell Williams)” by Cassius
It’s been 10 year since Cassius last released an album, but the Parisian electronic duo (not that one) are officially back. Go Up is the latest track to surface from the upcoming Ibifornia (out June 24th) and it features guest spots from Cat Power & Pharrell. Be sure to check out Action and The Missing too if you missed them.
🔥 DON’T MISS: “Lonely Lover” by Xenia Rubinos
If you’re a fan of Esperanza Spalding (One from her stunning Emily’s D+Evolution album was a recent Song Of The Week pick), you will love this new track from Xenia Rubinos. Taken from her upcoming 2nd album, Black Terry Cat (out June 3rd), Lonely Lover sees Xenia channeling her inner Erykah Badu in this super-funky and soulful gem.
🔥 DON’T MISS: “Butterfly” by Twin Peaks
Surely one of the trickiest bands to google thanks to David Lynch’s classic TV show, Twin Peaks have never quite reached the peak (sorry!) their songs have promised. Hopefully the release of Butterfly and their upcoming 3rd album, Down In Heaven (out May 13th), will see them finally get the attention they deserve.
🙌 WORTH A LISTEN: Hope Sandoval from Mazzy Star teams with Psychic Ills on the stunning I Don’t Mind, Andy Stott returns with Butterflies, White Lung follow up the amazing Hungry with the equally great Kiss Me When I Bleed, Moses Sumney returns with Everlasting Sigh, LUH (new band from Wu Lyf’s Ellery James Roberts & Ebony Hoorn) share Beneath The Concrete, Steve Gunn returns with Conditions Wild, Gold Panda shares In My Car and recruits his grandma for the video, John Collins from The New Pornographers remixes Destroyer’s My Mystery, and workaholic Anderson .Paak teams with London-based production duo SNAKEHIPS on Money On Me…
🎬 VIDEO OF THE WEEK: Michael Stipe: The Man Who Sold The World
Ahead of his appearance at the David Bowie tribute shows in New York, REM’s Michael Stipe (& his immense beard) performed The Man Who Sold The World on Jimmy Fallon.
🤓 ARTICLE OF THE WEEK: This Is How Much The Most Famous DJs In The World Are Worth
With so much debate over artists’ pay & the value of a stream these days, this is certainly an eye-opening account of how much some artists are worth (DJs at least). Trust us, it’s 😱.
😍 LET’S LOOP CLASSICS: “What’s Going On” by Marvin Gaye
“A concept album told from the point of view of a Vietnam War veteran returning to the country he had been fighting for and seeing only hatred, suffering and injustice”, What’s Going On is Marvin Gaye’s masterpiece and arguably one of the greatest albums of all time. 45 years on and it still feels as relevant as ever.
