A top-ranked attraction in Tucson, the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum has been providing education, enrichment, and community initiatives for more than 60 years. Encompassing nearly 100 acres of pristine desert environment, the museum includes a zoo, botanical garden, art gallery, and aquarium. The Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum also stands as an important advocate for wildlife and natural resources in the area, and it has recently taken the lead in the fight against buffelgrass.

Initially introduced in the 1940s as a method to control soil erosion, buffelgrass has grown into one of the greatest environmental threats to the Sonoran region. The hardy dry grass poses multiple problems for the local habitat, perhaps most importantly due to the ways in which it competes for light and other resources with the famous saguaro cactus native to the region.

Along with the Pima Association of Governments and the Sky Island Alliance, the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum is committed to fighting this invasive species and protecting the native southern Arizona landscape for generations to come.
