An Internship Hunt

It’s been a few weeks since summer has started and honestly, I’ve enjoyed the recent downtime. I miss working and filling my day. Though I started applying to a few jobs here and there prior to starting my summer holidays, it’s only been the past two weeks that I’ve been receiving replies.

Sources: Let me tell you, Gumtree is a great resource for job scouting. So are YCN Opportunities and It’s Nice That Jobsboard. LinkedIn is another great base to start looking from. I’ve had made sure that I’ve kept updating my profile over the years and so a profile build-up and website update were fairly easy.

I’ve found a few works that I forgot I even had and so included those in my online portfolio as well. I’m quite proud of myself to see improvement and concept evolution from my old work to my present.

Opportunities: As with all applications, the reason why you apply for more than you’d expect to is because sometimes they just won’t reply. And that’s okay. I’ve been incredibly lucky to have had recent interests and also to have received compliments about my work.

I’ve received one offer that I’m currently in the middle of trying to earn. The New Islander is a digital publication founded in 2009 and currently revamping. I’m incredibly flattered at the opportunity presented. To be scouted from what felt like out of nowhere to being offered a job as a Co-Founder and a Creative Director — It’s overwhelming.

But in a good way. My initial thoughts on it were something along the lines of: Am I ready to jump into this? I’m 21, why me? They could have found someone better… Etc. But so far, I’m rolling with it. The more I think about what I could contribute and how, the more keen I am on pursuing the job. I guess we’ll find out soon.

Another opportunity that I’m currently pursuing is with an entrepreneur. The job entitles me to the role as graphic designer yet I could potentially be part of the development and the growth of a business from scratch. As I was looking through internships, I kept telling myself that I wouldn’t settle in a big company only to become a runner. If anything, I want to partake in a job that allows me to help it grow and one that allows me to make a personal impact or mark. Hence why this second opportunity was so intriguing. If I could not only be a graphic designer but also witness how a business is started up from square one, it’s great entrepreneurial experience on its own.

A third opportunity is a company in Euston and I have an interview with them tomorrow. I have yet to find out more about it and am looking forward to doing so — as far as I’ve been briefed, my job would entail me to create inforgraphics which I’ve loved doing.

So we’ll see. I have two months and counting down till another two of travels and holiday-ing.
