Solving Farmers Problems Using Technology

Wireless Smart Seeding Machine — The Social Techno Innovation from students of Bannari Amman Institute of Technology

R. Natheesh Kumar and K.Boopathiraja of Bannari Amman Institute of Technology (ECE 2nd Year) are making waves in the field of agricultural technology. Often, the problems faced by farmers are not complicated to understand, and it can be solved using technology, like this one about seeding. When a farmer sows seeds in his farm, he plants them uniformly hoping to reap all of them in the future.

The problem arises when a lot of them don’t grow properly. Now, what he can do is, go back and re-seed those areas. The problem with that is, by causing movement in those areas, the chances of him displacing the properly growing seeds are immense, leading to loss on both areas.

This was one area the students of BIT gave thought to, and have now come up with a robot prototype, wherein the said robot will navigate through the land, and replace the faulty seeds with good ones without any displacement.

They’ve even made operations of the robot easy, as all it needs is a smartphone. With possibilities of making it completely automatic by coding the part for which the smartphones are used, the students are inspired and motivated to improve the prototype.

Their vision extends beyond invention. They plan to employ local youth to help farmers operate, thereby providing job opportunities as well. Congratulations to this young team! We wish them luck in all their endeavours!
