5 Misconceptions about being a Momtrepreneur

I became a momtrepreneur because, like many moms, I wanted to walk in my purpose while personally raising my children. I couldn’t possibly leave my children with a babysitter while I “followed my dreams.” So, I decided to use my skills and education to create my own coaching business. But when I took my coaching business serious, I realized that being a momtrepreneur was way different than the media portrayed it. I was fooled into thinking that this would be easy. I also realized that the people closest to me were also fooled. So let me help you by shedding some light on the misconceptions of being a momtrepreneur.

Misconception #1: You have a flexible schedule

Now although this is true to some extent, it is not entirely true. Yes we can take our children to the dentist before 5:00 and have dinner prepared in time. But these things must be penciled into our calendar. Momtrepreneurs succeed when we have a system in place. In fact, because we don’t have to report to a boss, keeping a schedule as a momtrepreneur can be more difficult. It takes consistency and self-determination to stick to a schedule.

Misconception #2: Work is easy

When many people think of what being a momtrepreneur is like, they think of a woman drinking coffee in her pajamas typing away on her laptop. She puts in a few hours of work and then has the rest of the day to do whatever she wants. This couldn’t be far from the truth. If you work a 9–5 you put in “x” amount of hours to get “y” amount of money. Not so with being a momtrepreneur. We have to put in more hours than the typical worker in order to put a dent in out bank account. It’s far from easy. We have to research, create, market and deliver our products and services. Everything from inventory to financials are handled by us. If we have the ability some of us hire virtual assistants to help. But now we are responsible for the supervision of others but their livelihood as well.

Misconception #3: It’s just a side job

Some moms decide to go into businesses for themselves with the mindset that they will make some extra cash. Now, in order to make this extra cash it takes extra work. Whenever someone says, “it’s just a side job,” they belittle the hard work that each mom pours into their business. Being a momtrepreneur is not a hobby or side hustle. It may be true that some momtrepreneurs have a regular 9–5 job along with their business, but that does not negate the fact that we still have to put in the same amount of work they would a full time job.

Misconception #4: You spend your whole day on social media

Momtrepreneurs are all over social media. A successful momtrepreneur posts daily more than once on various platforms. To the average person it looks like we’re fooling around. In reality, the successful momtrepreneur is able to use these platforms to leverage our business. Social media outlets are places where we are able to build meaningful relationships with prospective clients.

Misconception #5: You get to spend more time with your children

It’s true that momtrepreneurs spend more time at home since our office is based in our homes. However, as mentioned before, being a successful momtrepreneur means dedicating countless amount of hours towards building and growing our business. Often times family and friends get neglected if there are no real systems in place. So, even though we get into business for ourselves to be closer with our children, it can actually pull us further apart.

Conclusion

Being a momtrepreneur is a daring path to venture on. And while it’s true it has its rewards, it also has its hardships. So if you are thinking about being a momtrepreneur, please do your research. And if you run into a momtrepreneur, don’t jump to conclusions too quickly as to what their life is like.
