Under the Banner of Heaven (2022) Review
Anyone who enjoyed the first season of True Detective should love Under the Banner of Heaven. The vibe, the tone and sometimes the appearance are very similar.
That is a compliment because like that first season, Under the Banner of Heaven makes for gripping television.
Andrew Garfield is superb as Detective Jeb Pyre, a Mormon who finds himself investigating his own following a gruesome murder and having his beliefs seriously questioned in the process.
The cast around him are similarly excellent, particularly the various Lafferty men as they sink into various stages of madness and religious extremism and their wives fight to escape. Both sets of actors put in refined displays that never feel over the top or hammy.
Add in a genuinely unpredictable story and a dose of quite fascinating Mormon history and beliefs and it makes for must watch viewing.
