I would argue it’s not even necessarily about parents choosing to give their kids stuff vs. time, but about how the family (and its finances) are organized. The one kid I grew up with who we considered spoiled spent plenty of time with her parents, and they were not rich. It was just clear that her needs and wants came first, in a way that would have been unimaginable in my family. I don’t even mean that in a bad way, and I can see Ester’s point about the connotations of the word, but there was a visible-to-12-year-olds difference.
