Are you in North Macedonia, spending a few days in the capital (Skopje) and wondering what a good day activity may be like, for all ages including families with kids?

Vodno is the mountain closest to Skopje that can easily be accessed by car, public transportation or by foot, if you like easy/moderate hiking.

Why is it special?

1) The view

On a clear sky day you can look at the entire capital of Skopje from above. This view is best possible from the peaks of Vodno. With 1000m+ height it offers an overview of the city and it’s surrounding areas, a great exercise to recognize the neighborhood where you are staying.

If the weather is cloudy, or foggy, you may not see the city but a blanket of clouds, nothing less impressive. Bonus, you know you’ll be breathing fresh air.

2) The fresh air

Mountains and forests are best known for fresh and clean air. Skopje tends to be polluted especially in the wintery months, making Vodno the best getaway for fresh air. If you don’t want to contribute to the pollution, get there by public transportation (bus n25) or hike from the bottom of the mountain.

3) Outdoor activities for everyone

You don’t have to be sporty to go to Vodno and enjoy yourself. Apart from the hiking opportunities it offers, it also has a cable car from the middle of the mountain which is also reachable by car or bus.

If you have kids, great! The top offers plenty of fun for kids of all ages, including playgrounds, picnic tables and plenty of space to run and have fun with other kids.

Do you like drinking coffee instead of doing sports? Again you can do that plus with an amazing view.

Do you have other reasons why you love going to Vodno?

Please let me know in the comments!

Tip: Parking is free except for weekends or bank holidays, when it is usually crowded.
