Mini Essay-Our Global Village

The concept of the global village defined by McLuhan and Moos (2014, p. 108) is “a world in which people encounter each other in depth all the time”. In the contemporary world, global village becomes more diversified with various cultures brought by different people from all parts of the world. Global village provides people a new space to share information, ideas and their cultures. All these changes are due to the emergence of the new media.

Medium as an important tool for people’s communication plays an essential role in transmitting messages between people. The improvement of the medium means the information could be required more efficient and faster. The medium experienced from ear-worlds to eye-worlds. Nowadays, the old media has been increasingly replaced by new media. Some hot media such as Twitter, Facebook are preferred to be used rather than cool media like newspaper or radio. This is because new technologies promote a more convenient way for people to interact with each other. In other words, media changes the social temperatures that more conflicts come out around people’s life. The global village is no longer a component of many individuals, but a space where people share the common things. Therefore, this world needs more inclusiveness on people along with their cultures.

In such an electronic age, everyone can acquire the information in the meantime through networks. As Bareviciute (2010) stated, electronic media had created chances for people to interact without any limitations of space, time or the distances and networks had made connections with millions of people’s communication around the world. That means people could communicate with others whenever they want and wherever they are. The internet provides a big platform that anyone can share experiences on it and there would be interactions on people’s ideas or actions.

These new modalities of media have greatly promoted revolutions of the society, but also the world’s economics. New technologies have been learned and adopted broadly all over the world. It could be believed that the unceasing updated new media will always stimulate the society’s development. Notably, global village will always be ready to accept new technologies and will never stop the steps to make progress.
