Alison is swimming through a murky dream when a small hand pulls her into the waking world. “Mommy,” says five-year-old Lulu. “I’m hungry.”

Alison looks at the clock: six a.m. Wan sunlight filters through the curtains. The day, like it or not, has begun.

Lulu tugs the covers off Alison who groans softly. “Let Mommy sleep just a little longer.”
