Hacksaw Ridge and An Army of Youth
One of the biggest movies of the fall was Hacksaw Ridge. It was based on the extraordinary story of conscientious objector Desmond T. Doss, who saved 75 men in Okinawa, during the bloodiest battle of WWII, without firing a single shot. Believing that the war was justifiable, but killing was nevertheless wrong, he was the only American soldier in WWII to fight on the front lines without a weapon. As an army medic, Doss single-handedly evacuated the wounded near enemy lines — braving enemy fire and putting his own life on the line. He was the first conscientious objector to ever be rewarded with the Congressional Medal of Honor.
In Revelation 12 we read about great war between good and evil — a battle between Christ and Satan. This controversy wasn’t a physical war, but one that involved the true nature and character of God. In this war, both Christ and Satan are looking for recruits for this great battle. The youth are the main recruits to join one of these two forces. But why? The apostle Paul emphasizes the importance of the youth and their call in this battle between good and evil. Paul states in 1 Timothy 4:12 to “Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity.”
This is why the youth are so valuable. Christ is looking to recruit the youth to His army because of their capability of setting the standard and example in speech and conduct. They can show how love should be demonstrated, what faith should look like, and show what it means to be pure in this generation. In the book Christian Service there’s a quotation that speaks on why the youth are being heavily recruited.
“The Lord has appointed the youth to be His helping hand. With such an army of workers as our youth, rightly trained, might furnish, how soon the message of a crucified, risen, and soon-coming Saviour might be carried to the whole world!”
God sees the potential of the youth to be able to carry His message of love to the world. However, Satan is looking and recruiting an army of youth as well. Ellen White writes a very powerful quote concerning the youth of today and how they will shape the future of society. She quotes:
“The future of society will be determined by the youth of today. Satan is making earnest, persevering efforts to corrupt the mind and debase the character of every youth… Satan is gathering an army of youth under his banner; and he exults, for through them he carries on his warfare against God.”
So the question is simple. Whose army will you choose to join?
As I researched how many youth are preparing themselves for this warfare. I was astonished to see the numbers. The numbers seem to be stacked against the youth of today. In the book Testimonies to the Church it notes how unprepared the youth are to combat the devil. Notice the following.
“The young want just what they have not; namely, religion. Nothing can take the place of this. Profession alone is nothing. Names are registered upon the church-books upon earth, but not in the book of life. I saw that there is not one in twenty of the youth who knows what experimental religion is. They serve themselves, and yet profess to be servants of Christ; but unless the spell which is upon them be broken, they will soon realize that the portion of the transgressor is theirs.”
That’s 1 in 20 that do not know how to have a relationship with Jesus in this day and age. So what do we do? We must recruit others to the army of Christ. We must be about our Father’s business. We must elevate Christ and make Him the attractive God that He truly is. Just like Desmond Doss was willing to represent this country in a Godly manner, so we are called to represent a heavenly kingdom. Are we willing to put our lives on the line for the betterment of the world? Doss received the Congressional Medal of Honor for his heroics, but what we are striving to receive is something of much more value. A Crown of Life! Will you join God’s army today?
