With the release of The Incredible 2, there has never been a better time to look revisit Pixar’s amazing catalog. Since the release of Toy Story in 1995, Pixar has been dazzling audiences with films which are not only amazing to look at, but deal with life and emotions in a surprisingly complex and honest way. This what keeps moviegoers coming back for more, regardless of their age. Here are seven of Pixar’s best!

7. The Incredibles

Before we were inundated with Marvel and DC movies, Pixar gave us The Incredibles. A spoof on superhero movies, James Bond films, and even suburban America, The Incredibles is something that anyone who has had trouble fitting in will relate to. The fact that 14 years later there was still considerable demand for a sequel shows you just how relevant this movie and its message still is.

6. Monsters Inc.

Monsters Inc. brilliantly plays with the idea of children being scared of monsters in the dark. For the monsters of Monstropolis, not only is scaring children a mundane every task they perform to get a paycheck, but the monsters themselves actually live in fear of the children who are supposed to carry poisonous diseases. With surprisingly warm characterization, one of the things which truly makes this film unforgettable is the dynamic of John Goodman and Billy Crystal.

5. Inside Out

Inside Out breaks new ground by having the majority of the film take place inside the mind of 11-year-old Riley, who is moving to San Francisco and having difficulty with the emotions that result. A colorful cast of characters represents each of Riley’s emotions as she struggles to come to terms with what she’s experiencing. Both children and adults need to be reminded of the important roles that all of our emotions play, even the ones we deem to be negative.

4. Up

Leave it to Pixar to make a children’s film which so honestly deals with death and aging. Up’s love story, which plays out in the opening ten minutes, is more affecting and more memorable than what the vast majority of movies can achieve during their full running time. Up reminds us all of the importance of following our adventurous spirit, no matter what sadness life has thrown our way, and the visual of aging protagonist Carl Fredricksen’s house being lifted to the sky with balloons is etched into all of our memories.

3. Finding Nemo

Any parent that has ever struggled with balancing protecting their child and allowing them freedom to experience the world around them will relate to Marlin’s struggle. In addition to an amazing main cast, even the seemingly minor characters in Finding Nemo are absolutely unforgettable, with an undersea world which is so rich in detail it’s worth seeing for the visuals alone. With particularly memorable dialogue, this is a movie which is going to be quoted years later by anyone who has seen it.

2. Wall-E

Is it a love story? Is it a critique on the state of the human race? Is it a warning about the environment? Wall-E is all of these things and so much more. Inspired by old silent movies, the first half hour of this film is practically free of dialogue. Wall-E is the perfect film to prove to someone that a children’s movie can still be substantially thought provoking.

1. Toy Story

Considering the way that computer animated movies have taken off, you might forget just what a profound impact Toy Story had when it was first released. Toy Story is famous for being the first feature-length computer animated movie, and did much to set itself apart from the type of movies being produced by Disney at the time. Spawning two highly successful sequels, the original Toy Story was groundbreaking and set an exciting path for the future. All these years later, this film holds up as an absolute classic.
