So you’re new to Power BI. You’ve watched countless videos, read the blogs, and now you’re ready to build your first report and impress your coworkers with your new skills.

You import your tables, transform your data, and begin building your visuals. One of those visuals will be a map. Perhaps it’s office locations, customer addresses, or places you’ve travelled to, but when you assign the values you notice something strange.

You’ve never been to Moscow, Idaho!? Winnipeg is in Missouri?

Power BI map errors often occur when two cities share the same name. This can be frustrating for Power BI beginners as there is most often nothing wrong with your data, the incorrect plot is happening through the mapping service.

In this example we take a simplified data model with two tables to demonstrate one of the ways this problem can be fixed. The first table is a fact table containing transactions for an online retailer. The second table is a dimension table containing of a list of cities and their provinces in Canada. The relationship between the fact table and dimension table is based on the city fields.
