Copland House Hosts Cultivate Institute for Emerging Composers

A cosmetic surgeon based in New York, NY, Dr. Lopa Gupta oversees Park Avenue Facial Aesthetics, which has three office locations throughout New York and Florida. Outside of her professional activities, Dr. Lopa Gupta works to give back to the community through her support of such local nonprofits as Copland House. This year, Dr. Gupta will serve as the Co-chair for the annual fundraiser gala for Copland House to be held at Le Bernardin in New York City.

The former home of American composer Aaron Copland, Copland House is a National Historic Landmark and the site of a variety of programs and activities that nurture musical creativity and promote America’s musical heritage. Since 2012, Copland House has conducted CULTIVATE, a creative workshop and mentoring program for talented young composers.

Each year, six emerging composers are invited to participate in the weeklong institute, held every June at Copland House and at the Merestead estate in northern Westchester County, New York. CULTIVATE Fellows take part in workshops, musical readings, and informal discussions with program director Derek Bermel and other visiting composers and musicians. During their stay, each Fellow also composes a five- to seven-minute composition, which is performed at a public concert.

The next CULTIVATE institute will be held June 5–11, 2017. Copland House is accepting applications until mid-December and will announce the list of selected Fellows in spring 2017.
