It’s Not About Race!

The Division Already Exists

“if I’m white you’ve set up an argument where either I must agree with you or I must be part of the problem (white normalization.)”

That’s a common reaction, you’re not alone. But life rarely gives you just two choices, so (thankfully) this is a false dichotomy. You aren’t necessarily actively, consciously causing the problem, but you are part of the system. You can’t help how you were socialized when you were growing up — though you can change how you see society now.

“My issue with this approach, is that you’re creating division.”

Again, a common reaction, but not true. The division already exists. Very much. Pervasively. If you’re not aware of it, then talking about it seems like creating it.

All he’s doing is revealing the division that exists. We can’t mend a division if we don’t understand that we’re divided, and why.

Don’t get me wrong, I love white people, I am one myself. I’m also part of the system that you grew up in. The truth about our country is disconcerting to us, but it is the truth. The sooner we see the truth, the sooner we can start understanding each other. We (white people) can’t understand people of color until we accept a basic truth about their lives.
