This story makes no sense. Excel and Lisp (or Scheme) are two completely different tools for two completely different purposes. Having some better than basic knowledge of Excel is always going to be useful, especially in data science where you will spend vast amounts of time wrangling data and you will at times need a simple tool for having a quick peak at data or you just need to create a timesheet of hours worked. And Excel skills are easily ported to using OpenOffice etc. A comparison between Lisp (or Scheme) and Prolog might have been more interesting.
