As a classical musician (who also teaches a ton of private students), I can tell you for sure that the quality of practice is everything. For my students, I use the labels “fake practicing” and “real practicing” to distinguish between the deliberate/goal oriented practicing and the kind of practicing where you’re just playing. Often students think practicing=playing, and they don’t find themselves improving much. After a real practice session, the brain should feel tired too!
