Partnering to create skilled trades career opportunities

Michigan is a state that builds amazing products. We were the state that put the world on wheels and which served as the Arsenal of Democracy in World War II.

Our economic comeback puts these skilled careers back into high demand. But there’s one big problem. Companies can’t find skilled workers to fill the in-demand jobs to make their manufacturing operations run.

Today, LG Calley visited EMS Grand Rapids, a company that does a great deal of machining, welding and other metal fabrication. They also rewind and mechanically rebuild electric motors — a mainstay in any industrial application. You need skilled workers to do this heavy-duty work and EMS is committed to building a skilled workforce.

EMS has partnered with Innovation Central High School in Grand Rapids to create an internship and mentorship program, bringing on students to gain on-the-job skills that they can put to use after graduation.

During the visit LG Calley met a young man named Omar who just graduated from Central Innovation and after an internship at EMS, they’ve hired him full time and he’s building a career. This is the prime example of the opportunities that exist.

LG Calley hopes to see more schools partnering with businesses to create top-talent and fill our talent shortage at the same time.
