Jan, why Colombia?

There are several reasons for this move. As a holder of a development policy scholarship, in 2005 I supported the national »Futbol por la Paz« network at that time. In a way, I felt like an ‚ambassador’ for the 1st Street Football World Cup¹, which took place in Berlin-Kreuzberg as part of the Fifa World Cup 2006 in Germany. …

Taller

Article

by Jan Schiele

It’s dizzy this weekday and I decide to commute to work taking Berlin’s often praised public transport. And yes, like R.E.M. states in “Übahn”, I have the feeling that is changing me. It’s changing me, because it reminds me of what plurality in security really feels like on a daily basis. Some would claim, that less and less people share these feelings. That democracy’s fundament is supposedly crumbling, because it can’t compete with the simple messages of propagandist’s attempts to separate us. But, is that really the case? And how can we all make sure this won’t happen?

Here in S-Bahn 42, everyone is exposed to one another, accepted and questioned in the same way: What do you do? What do you believe in? To whom or to what do you belong to? And it becomes obvious that community and democracy is an unsettling and at the same time comforting messy muddle of outer and inner perceptions, beliefs, feelings and actions. …

Case Study

Ocean Archive

Last year we were approached to help co-ideate a database for ocean-related science, art and policy, based on collaboration, open-access and sharing. A platform where you can find images of baby turtles as well as scientific papers on water acidity, run by a community of artists, scientists and policy-makers that will grow this project into the go-to online resource for ocean-everything.

With a clear scope to target leisure users as well as professionals, and to build a collaborative working space behind the scenes, this was no easy task, but surely an important and intriguing one.

Now is the time to act

The vision of a digital platform that connects artists and scientists and spreads knowledge and awareness globally is born in the summer of 2017 from TBA21-Academy, the inquisitory arm of renowned contemporary art foundation TBA21. The politics and philosophy of open-source and accessibility are central to the Academy’s approach so the platform had to rely on a Creative Commons legal framework. …

Almir: Dear Gesine, you’ve been working as a photographer for 11 years now. What has inspired you to choose this profession—was it always a hobby you wanted to pursue?

Gesine: No, after high school I decided to enrol in chemistry, but with time I realised that practice in a lab was not my thing after all. I really enjoyed the theory, but the laboratory did not bring me any real joy. So I went to an Art School that was very practical and I had very nice professor, Ute Mahler, she’s founder of Ost Kreuz—a huge, really nice photography agency, really artsy—and she taught me how to be a photographer. …
