I Am Losing My Culture

If you do not use your language, you will lose it,

dark voice of Borinquen, you sit across from me,

you cover the cards we’re playing with and I think

of Sabado Gigante. Child of immigrant, you don’t

remember El Chacal, you cannot lose something you

never had. We continue the game in Spanish,

all Spanish, all struggle for me to keep up,

pretend to know every word, pretend my co-workers

understand me when I admit I am losing my culture.
