Alex, very good article… I would've gone a step beyond, though. Given that the current sheet music nomenclature will not go away, and that your aim is to help starting players, I would think the best thing to do is to have an automated way that would present the sheet music, highlight a portion of it (the rest could be grayed out) and show a simplified form, more suitable for the beginner, of the highlighted section. The advantage of this is twofold: 1) the beginner learns the traditional style, and 2) the beginner learns to play with a very visual aid (without the aid being encumbered by having to be a simplified method of writing sheet music). By looking past the task of ‘making a new version of writing sheet music’ and solving both problems above, you end up with a better solution, I think… does that make sense?
