Serif faces are more legible for reading blocks of text and longer works. Sans-serifs are more legible for headlines, display, signage, and other short bursts of text. That’s the standard split everyone who works with type is taught; I recall there’s been research that might contradict it but serif for long and sans-serif for short is still followed.
