SPAM — The Mystery meat

SPAM isn’t a mystery meat at all. According to the ingredient list on the SPAM website, there are only 6 ingredients in SPAM: chopped pork shoulder with ham, salt, water, potato starch, sugar, and sodium nitrite. SPAM is a brand name, made by Hormel Foods Corporation, for a canned meat that is cooked under vacuum pressure. There are other similar brands canned pork meat products, but SPAM is the original and the best selling of the brands. The standard SPAM can is brick-shaped and holds 7 oz (198 g) of meat. The can of SPAM contains 595 calories, 490 calories of fat, 24.5g of protein, and 2.625g of sodium.

SPAM rose to popularity since you can eat it right out of the can, making it a useful product for feeding soldiers during World War II. But SPAM lends itself to a variety of culinary deliciousness in all meals. It’s like a bacon substitute. Tastes good but not usually very good for you.
