There are people like this living in NYC; it’s just that they don’t really interact with anyone who isn’t just like themselves. They’re here for career reasons and have no intention whatsoever of becoming urbane. I’ve had neighbors like this even in the east village — suburban bros and bro-ettes — they come here for a few years to make their careers & pair off, then they piss off someplace else, leaving a trail of lousy chain stores behind.
