All Thumbs, Why Reach Navigation Should Replace the Navbar in iOS Design
Brad Ellis

Every time I see such a touch zones diagram, I feel a little bit frustrated that Google is also switching more and more from navigation drawers to bottom bars. Sure it also has it’s problems, it is hidden away and you need to know the gesture otherwise the alternative with the hamburger icon is also in the least accessible place. But once you do — and it should be a common pattern by now — for me it feels much more comfortable as everything ends up in the area that is the easiest to reach while reaching the button in the bottom bar on the side where your grip is, is comparatively uncomfortable.

The other problem of course is, that it now conflicts with apples back gesture, so I have to get used to a in my opinion inferior navigation.
